April 28, 2022

1:00-2:30 pm EST

Description of the Training:

  • 90-minute virtual workshop provides an overview of the physiology of family coping and then examines how these systems are influenced by chronic stress and trauma to alter family coping. Finally, we introduce specific and related therapeutic activities that increase families’ coping resources for attendees to practice.
  • This training is appropriate for clinicians, case managers, family support workers, peer leaders, and paraprofessionals.
  • At the conclusion of the training, participants will 1) Describe at least 2 core coping skills that are linked to resilience in families in the aftermath of traumatic experiences; 2) Identify at least 3 effects of traumatic experiences on family coping; and 3) Use at least 3 new skills to help families build coping resources.

Training Team:

Laurel Kiser is a psychologist and developer of SFCR. She received support from the National Institute of Mental Health and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to develop family-based interventions to address the high rates of trauma exposure and the prevalence of trauma-related disorders related to poverty. Laurel provides SFCR training locally, nationally, and internationally and consults with multiple child services systems implementing SFCR.

Kami Neves is a mental health counselor who initially implemented SFCR at The Children’s Center Utah in collaboration with The YWCA of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. She worked with others to develop adaptations for the activities in SFCR for families with young children. She currently works as the Director of Clinical Services at the YWCA Utah and focuses on training clinicians and paraprofessionals on the SFCR Multi-Family Group model.

Megan Mooney is a psychologist who first implemented SFCR at a large community mental health center in Houston, Texas and continue to champion the model throughout Texas. She helped create a small workgroup that adapted SFCR for Latino families and another workgroup that is adapting SFCR for families with LGBTQ+ youth.  Megan currently works in private practice and collaborates with community partners on how to implement SFCR in new settings.

Vikki Rompala is a licensed clinical social worker who was initially trained in and implemented SFCR at LaRabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago, IL, where she helped integrate peers as co-facilitators.  She has since taken the model to other social service settings within domestic violence and adoption preservation including early childhood services recently. Vikki was the lead developer of FamLingo, a game to increase family fun and resilience.
